Minneapolis was once the world's flour milling capital and is now home to the headquarters of six Fortune 500 corporations: Target, U.S. Bancorp, Xcel Energy, Ameriprise Financial, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, and PepsiAmericas. The city is the primary business center between Chicago and Seattle; commerce, finance, rail and trucking services, health care, and industry fuel the Minneapolis economy. The biggest employers in the city include the University of Minnesota, Wells Fargo, Macy's, and ING Group. The City of Lakes was named one of the Seven Cool Cities for young professionals.

Over twenty lakes and wetlands sprawl throughout the city, making Minneapolis an ideal destination for fans of fishing and other forms of water recreation like boating. The City of Lakes boasts one of the best-designed and best-maintained park systems in the United States. Theses parks have created the perfect environment for outdoor activities like biking, running, hiking, and picnicking. Major recreation parks include the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, and Theodore Wirth Park.

The city is also a hub for theater, professional sports, and other forms of entertainment. Minneapolis boasts the third-largest theater market in the nation; New York City is the only city in America with more live theaters per capita. The NFL, NBA, WNBA and MLB all have franchises based in the city: the Minnesota Vikings, the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Minnesota Lynx, and the Minnesota Twins. All of the aforementioned teams play their home games in Minneapolis. The popularity of theater and professional sports in the City of Lakes has opened an avenue for bars and nightclubs to be successful, bringing folks in to enjoy drinks after a show or knock back a few while watching the game.
